This is an opinion piece. My read on the news, not reporting. Disagree freely.
Last Friday (June 12, 2026), the Trump administration forced Anthropic to pull Mythos 5 and Fable 5 — three days after launch.
The official reason: a “national security” risk over a minor jailbreak. The real reason looks simpler: if we can’t control who uses it, nobody gets it.
I think that’s a mistake. Here’s why.
It isn’t security. It’s panic.
- The vulnerability was marginal. Patchable, not existential.
- Over 100 cybersecurity experts already called the ban disproportionate.
- Chinese models are months behind, not years. An embargo doesn’t buy time at that distance. It just burns bridges.
You don’t ground a model the day after launch over something other public models already do.
The developer’s takeaway
If you write code for a living, this is a wake-up call.
Single-jurisdiction models are a liability. If your stack leans entirely on one US lab, you are one executive order away from a bricked product.
The escape hatch is obvious: lean harder on open weights — Llama, Mistral, OLMo, whatever fits. No single flag can ground them.
My rule going forward is boring: never bet a pipeline on one provider.
Where the money goes
Capital hates uncertainty. A blockade like this whispers “US AI is unreliable” to every non-American investor.
So I’d expect:
- EU money flowing toward Mistral and local champions.
- Sovereign funds pivoting to non-US partners.
- Asian conglomerates accelerating homegrown R&D.
The capital flight won’t be dramatic overnight. But the signal is loud. Give it a few years and these ecosystems close the gap.
The irony
The US just built a wall around its own AI garden.
But walls work both ways. They keep people in as much as they keep rivals out. While Washington fortifies the gate, everyone else is learning to smelt their own steel.
Blockades delay. They rarely prevent. And they have a habit of forging stronger competitors than the ones they were meant to stop.
My take: build with open weights, diversify your inference endpoints, and never trust a single flag with your roadmap. The future of AI is polycentric — and this blockade just made that future arrive faster.
